Views from Mobile World Congress 2008
Each year the wireless industry focuses on Barcelona for the erstwhile titled 3GSM, now Mobile World Congress. This year 55,000 attendees from the provider, hardware, software and services communities visited the congress. According to the GSM Association this was the largest turnout yet, increasing 3,000 from last year.
Keynote Speakers
The conference featured senior-level speakers from across the world that included chief executive of Vodafone Arun Sarin, CEO of China Mobile Wang Jianzhou, Cisco CEO John Chambers and Nokia’s Chief Executive, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo. Key soundbites included:
- Sarin, Vodafone: Data revenues up 40% year on year;
- Jianzhou, China Mobile: We have 370 million mobile subscribers, adding 5 million (yes, 5 million!) every month;
- Sarin, Vodafone: The broadband mobile internet has arrived - we now have 21 million 3G customers;
- Jianzhou, China Mobile: The majority of our new subscribers will experience the internet for the first time via a mobile telephone;
- Chambers, Cisco: ’mobility’ is no longer about particular devices, technologies or services. It is about using any device to access any content over any network, with IP as the basis for all communication.
- Sarin, Vodafone on WiMAX: "In the end... technology is not what matters; it’s services, it’s applications, it’s experiences...WiMAX will be just one part of the solution."
