3GSM: Barcelona was Buzzing!

Reading UK, 20th February, 2006 – Well the biggest problem at 3GSM was finding a free table for coffee or lunch, any time of day! There was a tremendous sense of energy and excitement both around the exhibition stands and in the number of meetings both formal and informal.

It was a chance for us to catch up with both clients and candidates from all over the world and the opportunity to make new contacts in a fascinating variety of technologies, products and services in this ever-changing communications market.

There was a lot of space devoted to IMS: will this be the backbone of mobile communications in the future? And, if so, how will companies find the new skill sets needed? (see Scott Carter’s article: (“Scarcity of IMS Skills Challenges Vendors’ Ability to Meet Demand”).

Also there was a big emphasis on mobile content and mobile TV. It certainly helped us to visualise the future when we saw some of the new handset technology. If you’ve ever wondered who would want to watch TV on such a tiny screen, the question was answered for us when we saw not only the latest high resolution screens but also the data delivery software which gave unbelievable screening clarity. And, equally impressive, were the demonstrations of surround sound for mobiles, giving even the tiniest screens huge impact way beyond their size.

It is also clear that as the mobile market matures, understanding the market from a geographical segmentation perspective will be not only a question of markets at different stages of maturity but also of permanently different cultural influences on usage.

The future belongs not only to the greatest technology but also to the finest brains in marketing (more on this in our next newsletter with an article by Ron Pettengill, CEO, Ganesh).
